Nutritional support in early life is an essential part of the clinical management of infants with food allergies, such as cows’ milk protein allergy (CMPA). When breastfeeding is not possible or for mixed feeding, there are several different types of infant formulas available to manage CMPA. How do you select the most appropriate one?

In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in how cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) is managed. Previously, the goal was to achieve symptom relief with a focus on allergen avoidance. More recently research has focused on additional nutritional factors that support the gut microbiota and immune system, such as prebiotic oligosaccharides, synbiotics and lactose.

This randomised controlled trial demonstrated that an amino acid formula with synbiotics is safe, well-tolerated and promotes normal growth. The formula was also shown to be hypoallergenic in infants with CMPA.

This randomised, controlled, double blind, prospective.multi-centre study evaluated the impact on growth and tolerance of an extensively hydrolysed formula containing synbiotics in healthy infants.

This was the first study done to demonstrate that amino-acid formula with synbiotic supplements supported a growth rate amongst infants with CMA similar to AAF without synbiotics

This randomised controlled trial shows that the use of synbiotics supplemented amino-acid formula for infants with a suspected CMA improved the growth of healthy gut microbiota to nearly the same level as healthy breastfed infants.
