During pregnancy a woman will need more iron than usual. Your growing baby is drawing enough iron from your body’s reserves to last them for up to six months after birth and that’s not all – baby also needs iron in utero for growth and development. For you, iron helps with the production of healthy red blood cells and prevents anaemia. This is a condition where the body cannot transport enough oxygen around the blood stream. Symptoms include fatigue and irritability, sensitivity to the cold and pale skin. Given all of this, it is very important that you are getting enough iron during your pregnancy.
